Remarkable Birth of Seven Cubs at Sarthana Nature Park in Surat

Sarthana Nature Park in Surat has witnessed a rare and extraordinary event— the birth of seven cubs by Smooth-Coated Otters, marking a significant achievement in wildlife conservation. Such a large litter is exceptionally uncommon, even in the wild. This achievement has garnered attention not only for its rarity but also because Sarthana Nature Park is the only zoo in India where smooth-coated otters have successfully bred.

The Smooth-Coated Otter (Lutrogale perspicillata) is a species native to South Asia, known for its sleek, streamlined body and playful, social nature. These otters are typically found in rivers, lakes, and wetlands, where they are essential to maintaining the balance of their aquatic ecosystems. Their populations, however, have been threatened due to habitat loss, water pollution, and poaching.

Sarthana Nature Park has been at the forefront of breeding and conservation efforts for this species. To date, 41 cubs have been born at the zoo, and 19 of them have been exchanged with other wildlife institutions across India. These exchanges are part of an important conservation strategy that helps maintain genetic diversity and improve the overall health of otter populations throughout the country.

The birth of these seven cubs is a testament to the dedicated efforts of the zoo’s staff in providing a nurturing environment for these otters. The park’s success in breeding smooth-coated otters highlights its critical role in preserving this endangered species and contributing to India’s broader conservation initiatives.
